The finishes, fixtures, lighting, and architectural form used also supported the design concept. Elements of new construction were expressed in sparing, modern, innovative ways, while the shell of the turn of the century building was left with most of its existing finishes (e.g. layers of paint with chips and scars). The existing perimeter walls tracked through the locker rooms, contrasting with the floating gang of freestanding showers/toilets in the center constructed of translucent glass panels with butt joint modern details. All plumbing fixtures were modern and contemporary. The use of gray, sand infused paints was juxtaposed against gilded metallic paint. An antique crystal chandelier was hung from the open trusses in the center of the entry ceiling, with a raw steel entry door as a backdrop, expressing the masculine/feminine and historical/modernist components of the concept.
